Boy Band Teen Top Comeback With the Sixth Mini Album Red Point/Warning Sign

Teen Top ~ Red Point/ Warning Sign

TEEN TOP recently dropped their track "Warning Sign" off their 'RED POINTalbum and have captured a new essence from their carefree boyish charms to dashing grown men! Their last hit "Ah Ahportrayed the beauty that comes from an obsessed man, and "Warning Sign" captures a change of heart, painting the scenario of being a smooth gentleman with a suspicious heart and worried mind.

"Warning Sign" has many appealing elements that make it a worthwhile listen! From its deeply toned beat, the guitar strumming that follows throughout, paired with tenor/falsetto pitches, the song gathered these sounds together wonderfully. My favorite aspect is the rich instrumental! It really sets a mood and picks up the pace for the individual moments occurring in the song. It opens with a strong bass strum and drum snare, taking you into a different direction before the rest of the instrumental kicks in. I'm happy it didn't keep a dependent groove sound entirely like 2PM's "My House", because it'd become generic fast. The glittering sound during Chunji's bridge is another whimsical aspect that makes the song have a mysterious atmosphere alongside the lyrics.

I personally feel the MV was successful in adding flavor to the story. The beautiful sapphire dice and hourglass emphasis that the relationship is just, sadly, another game, even the scenes by the stairs, seem like a lost labyrinth. I also love the melting licorice color drooling down the roses, lavishly decorated walls, and angels because it is a metaphor for a tainted purity. The image you first see can be quickly swallowed up by something different. The rich white manor becomes quickly darker and in disarray, symbolizing that the rich intimacy built between them is now being destroyed. When it comes to the boys' visuals, a mature feminine look was offered with only Ricky seeming the most masculine in style. Yet I like that TEEN TOP can bounce back in forth between fragile features to suave charms. It is not an easy concept to pull, just like girls groups who want to be cute and sexy all at once.

This song is more of a relatable message than merely an enjoyable beat. The opening lyrics"You wanna play girl? No more games. Now it's over," rubs off as a confident player vibe who knows how to win the game, especially in the way it was said. However, the lyrics offer a different story with the chorus stating "I won't be fooled again, I should get away from you, baby." I like the take on this storyline as it depicts a man who isn't sad he finally caught on to his girl's antics, but was weary from the start and feels victorious from catching her in the act. The song reminds me of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" as their lyrics share a message that this game, or "show," is over now and everyone can see right through them. I like the intensity in most of Neil's and Chunji's lines because they push the listener to believe that their lover was caught red handed in the act rather than confronting them after the fact. "I know what's inside your innocent looking eyes" is my favorite verse because I think it displays that deceiving monster everyone may meet in any relationship.

Alongside the praise, there are a few aspects of this song I simply don't care for. For starters, I thought the chorus was a little weak. I understand that this song opted for a smoother take but songs like "To You" and even "Ah Ah" incorporated a catchier chorus while maintaining a sound that glides from your ears into your mind. Secondly, I thought some portions of the rap were a little lackluster. Lyrically, it didn't carry as much depth as the rest of the song intended. The lines "Everything you did. Every single thing. When I look back. I can't forgive you. I just can't," are unique for only one reason. I feel the sudden shift in music brings me into L.Joe's mind, as it reminds me of when TV shows have that dream sequence music for a character's thoughts. You can tell the lyrics are a conversation of thoughts that are quickly pacing throughout his head rather than being said. The sudden picked up pace of the electric guitar strumming matched with Niel's adlibbing and snaps build up an intensity that L.Joe's mind is about to burst and he is ready to shout the first words that come to mind, offensive or not. That is when it brings life to the chorus "Your cruel excuses are making me mad."

Diving deeper into the album, the second track "Don't Go" is likable right off the bat. It has a intimate sound with lots of R&B influence. It is another instrumental that gives life to the song with more glittering sounds and everyone's voices can shine well, as it especially suits L.Joe's and C.A.P's rapping charisma and, as expected, Niel and Chunji's steady and high vocals. Check out the album preview clip to get a taste of what I'm talking about!

"Day" is a real favorite of mine! That sassy saxophone and soft piano play beautifully together. Rapping is also a big feature in K-Pop songs these days and it definitely pushes C.A.P's and L.Joe's voices to the front more than the other songs. I hope this is a song they will promote with as well if they choose another song from their album.
The album really built a solid amount of ballads, and "Liar" is no joke! The violins are so magical and revitalizing to hear instead of the constant acoustic guitar strumming and snaps that seem to be an ongoing sound in this album. I like how much "Liar" carries that same pained love from "Warning Sign" with its thought out lyrics. The tender "oohs" warm my heart, especially when the boys sing so gracefully. The track isn't filled with too many loud notes, which boosts the peaceful atmosphere the song carries.

"Day After Day" is the vitamin C this album needed. The songs seemed to follow a more mellow flow but this track offers up some light-hearted feels instrumentally. The synthesizing sounds that ride up and down in each bridge make it a real head swaying jam. I appreciate that the song dips from a comforting sound back to something with a more infectious melody.

The last track "Don't Drink" is another suave sound that is playful with its sounds and interactive lyrics, with the side conversations playing in the background. However, I'm not a big fan of too many side convos added in songs because I'd rather hear adlibs which, to my delight, Niel happily delivered and goes hard in for each and every verse. The song's "La La La La La" verse at the end is energetic despite sounding soft. If I had to pick a summer song from this album, this song works wonders on anyone's mood simply because of the carefree, sunny attitude.

The album is nicely done but after a while it was too calming for me. It wasn't putting me to sleep but I wouldn't be surprised if I did put these songs on to fall asleep to. Overall, the promotional track was well done and gives character to the image the boys worked so hard to personify. I think the tracks worth listening to first are "Don't Drink" and "Day" because it offered more variety to their musical abilities without escaping the overall smooth as butter concept. I appreciate the personality shown in each track of the album, which is why I score 'RED POINT' so generously. Keep doing your thang TEEN TOP!

Girl Band Dalshabet Comeback With the Ninth Mini Album Naturalness

Dalshabet ~ Naturalness
After releasing their full album 'Joker is Alive8 months ago,  Dal Shabet is back stronger than ever with their mini album  'Naturalness.' After announcing the departure of members Gaeun and Ji YulDal shabet definitely started the new year differently as a 4 member group. However, I appreciate when a group is able to still function despite the loss of members and form a unity as if they are still whole. If someone was new to Dal Shabet they wouldn't even notice they had more numbers in the past since they had a flawless transition into a 4-member group.

The song is finally steering Dal Shabet down the right path that they seemed to sway away from after "B.B.B." The song "Joker" was a joke (pun intended). #ShotsFired "Joker" was the kind of song you'd expect a rookie group to come back or even debut with, not start off their 4th year in the K-Pop industry. Either way, they got with the program and left that foolish style behind and paired with Brave Brothers for the creation of "Someone Like U"Together they dropped a promotional track that has another chance at scoring the ladies high on the charts. 1st place? Maybe if there are no other veteran groups performing, I can see it.

"Someone Like U" builds up with a low beat similar to SHINee's "Married To The Music"then drops a bomb of funky beats to bring in the hook, which is a clever way to get people addicted to a chorus quickly! The song is easy to like as it has the elements many trending songs have nowadays. A nice blend of synthesizing sounds, a bold drum beat (think Wonder Girl's "I Feel You"), and lots of subtle guitar riffs in the instrumental.

When it comes to vocals, Dal Shabet  are still singing in a fragile way as they often do, but it seems like a song that can be sung happily and well on stage. Serri is also given the duty of rapping this time, which is new to see. Her voice fits it well but we will see how well she masters it in future performances. The blends of member Subin and Woohee's voices during the chorus make it fun to hear! I like the switch between English and Korean for the chorus as well because it makes it easy for many fans to sing along to.

Alongside the lyrics, "Someone Like U" has a great message of telling a bad guy to meet someone just as bad as him so he gets a taste of his own medicine. What I appreciate most is that the overall theme isn't vengeful but playful! I like telling someone off in a fun way! That 80's sound is something dabbled with here and there by groups lately, but I feel it is something to be explored even more and Dal Shabet are digging into the gold mine!

The MV is another likable aspect. Although plain in some respects, the MV revolves around the members each realizing she fell hard for the same playboy. They come up with a plan to gun him down...with confetti guns of course! I like how MVs in which Dal Shabet utilized guns. Such as in "Hit U," tame the violence in feminine ways with pink blood and confetti in this case. It really signifies how when you get caught, everything seems to just blow up in your face.

The MV boasts those favorable pastel colors and the ladies also bring back their model like figures with outfits similar to their "B.B.B" promotions. I like the dancing, mainly the shimmies, but I feel they could've done something to make their concept's genre stand out more through dancing. It is aesthetically pleasing with the tasteful way of highlighting each individual member's look for this concept. Those green contact lenses were so well done, it almost looked natural on them! The added jackets embellish that 80's flair and I dig the whole floating box scenes, too. Everytime I see MVs like these I can't help but think they just need to be on more makeup and beauty magazine covers! Although it may seem like they pulled anEXID by doing somewhat of a remake of "B.B.B," it works well for them!

Back to the album, the opening track for the album "Gently" lives up to its name as it is a gentle track. I enjoy the pianos warm opening with a bit of added hustle! The song builds up an expectation of a more different sound but it meets the standards of any other light hearted ballad. It is not to say it isn't good, but I feel it might be missing one small element to make it spark. The finish is really touching with the vocal mash up backed by instrumental fusions of electric guitars, drums, and pianos, which lead into "Someone Like U."
I loved that the album had the concept of giving each member a solo track! It sparks interest and is a great way to know each artist's personal style. Subin's "From Head To Toe" is quite the ear candy. I love her delicate ab-libs in between the pre-chorus! The beat is strong as it also clings to synth sounds and a nice clap session. It has a lot of sounds you can move your body to and her bits of English thrown into the song aren't cringe worthy, thank goodness.

Serri's "Nice Guy" ft. Sims is cool, but nothing to go crazy for. I like that she added a rapper to her song since she is someone with good vocals. However, her song was underwhelming. The sweet lyrics are nice to embrace as she mentions her beautiful lover as a feeling to last forever but overall it wasn't anything I'd add to my playlist.

Ahyoung's song is a simple ballad, but not one to be easily dismissed. Even though she isn't strongly suited for a solo, "Dreams Come True" is something you can hear when watching a K-Drama couple slow dance during their anticipated kissing scene. I'd pick this song over Serri's in a heartbeat.  It has a lot of English in it that makes it easy for fans to understand her message as well.

Woohee is the next member to, of course, write a ballad. I was craving another fun, uplifting song but I guess Subin was the only one trying to deliver that feeling, but vaguely. Woohee has proven her vocal skills on variety shows such as 'Perfect Singer' and appears to like songs from the past that have a more comfort sound rather than being catchy. If this song had an MV it would be her strolling through the countryside and untouched villages because this song has a rooted, natural sound.

With that statement in mind, it makes listeners realize the songs fulfill the title of the album 'Naturalness.' The album depicts each singer's raw style and established  a down to earth sound. They were smart to comeback with something as catchy as "Someone Like U" but the real beauty is in each of the ballads for this album! Take a listen to the full album and decide for yourself if these songs are taking our four ladies to newer heights in 2016!

Girl Band Stellar Comeback With the Second Mini Album Sting

Stellar ~ Sting

Stellar has delivered yet another MV that is overflowing with sexy innocent charms! Being crafty with indirect messaging in "Vibrato"Stellar pushes curiosity with their latest playful release  "Sting"

The 4 seductive ladies of Stellar put a spring in one's step with the enticingly upbeat"Sting". The song and MV have a mischievous feeling while emphasizing feminine charms. Like a cat, the instrumental pounces into your mind as it is fun, energetic, and tantalizing. I feel as if the vivacious charms that made "Fool" so enjoyable was fused with the sensual but flirty "Vibrato" to create their love child that is "Sting".

I appreciate the emphasize on the title "Sting" being visually displayed in the MV through arrows, rose thorns, cactus needles, diamonds and bug bites. Love either stinks or stings and, in this case, it is the pestering thorn in their side. The song carries a tune similar to a game soundtrack that you'd find in one of the more fun towns or levels of any RPG. The alien-like whistle, rhythmic xylophone, and elongated piano notes make it funky and cheerful. It isn't a dance track but can simply be described more as an exciting, energy-inducing can of 'Red Bull'! The somewhat chirping sounds before the chorus are also oddly entertaining that I feel without it, the song would sound incomplete.
The song is quite lyrically driven too. It brings goosebumps to my heart the minute "Stellar" is whispered in the beginning! I also enjoy the energy found in each verse! The cleverly used English lines like "Judas Kiss or what?" is unique because it emphasis the idea that this kiss is betrayal or simply an act of friendship that may screw over the receiver's true intentions for love. Upon first hearing this sassy fun tempo, I really wanted to hear the girls push a deeper, huskier tone than a delicate upscale one. However, it is what helps the song become a real earworm.

The whine of "Do my words sting/make you feel something?" becomes undeniably catchy and fast. The main chorus leads to the notion that questioning this false love makes the recipient feel guilty and making uncomfortable expressions that lead to further doubt. Stellar can't tell if their lover wants to be friends or ever felt love for them to begin with, leading them to become "sherlock" and "a magnifier who sees through your mind." The use of realistic sounds like a clock ticking, dishes breaking, bubbles popping and their "ooh wow" has a panache that not all songs often include.

Not to mention the MV is superb, well done, and filled with many aesthetically pleasing scenarios. Some might find it distasteful but I love the fact the girls can appear lifeless on the bed one moment but induce trance-like movements with their sexy legs the next. It also highlights how sexy they are, and continue to be, in a teasing way when compared to the in-your-face choreo of "Marionette". The magazine covering Minhee's eyes, from an extremist point of view, make her appear without a mind, that her body is the only worthy aspect. Others can argue it emulates that she is thinking with her body rather than her mind or that she is literally reading between the lines and insinuating the listeners share this same perspective.
The picture of famous American Hollywood actor Clark Gable was another odd feature in this MV and they seemed to highlight him a lot which provided the intention he had a powerful meaning. It links to the plot of the classic film 'Gone With The Wind', emulating that the love in this song is the same. Long story short, the lead female of 'Gone With The Wind' vows to win over the love of Clark Gable, whom she loved all along but felt constantly misled by other situations.

The ladybug is another big reference throughout the MV that identified with another interesting back story. Ladybugs best represent 'Lady Luck,' which means luck in any aspirations - including love! Like a ladybug, this song brings an instance of pure delight! However, it also represents childlike behavior, notions, and intentions. That is why throughout the MV it is flicked away or even smacked because it is a consistent and repetitious depiction of the lovers childlike love and manner. If you notice the girls constantly draw in their legs and close off their bodies which represent the sheltered/withdrawn feelings toward the situation. This love isn't outwardly clear, more coy and hiding away. Another unique aspect is the fish eye viewpoint throughout the MV. One can assume we are the magnifying glass they speak about, closely inspecting what exactly we want from them and they want from their lover. The viewer can also get a sense of being a mirror in their bedroom, which suggests the walls and eyes have ears as only we view their inner thoughts. In the end, who is more conflicted; the confused lover or the one who can't give love back?
Regarding the track list, "Insomnia" has some potential but isn't a home run side track. "Sting" seems to outshine this song if anything. The angelic strums of the harps, the best part of this song, coupled with somewhat tough pounding drums/snares and synthesizing make "Insomnia" interesting but not as intense as the songs to follow.

When it comes to continue the light hearted sensations, "Love Spell" maintains this album's inner groove, making it a good listen! The "shabababa"is like a small love spell between the bridge and chorus as they depict their lover to open their eyes and realize their love instead of being a bad guy. It can further carry out their emotions from their first song as it even uses that same electric, synth sound in the instrumental.

"Cinderella" pushes a serious tone that gives Stellar more of a band style than an idol image. "Cinderella" also rushes into the chorus rather than building up with an intense bridge. It continues to describe their search for love, as well. However, it isn't as out there as the title track tends to be. However, it leads into "Vibrato" which brings that funk, which you can't resist loving, back into your mind!

In the end "Sting" is just beyond fun! Without a doubt their are countless amounts of metaphors and symbolize, carried over from their "Vibrato" MV, which I admire most about this group comeback concept! Eccentric and flashy symbolism makes for an entertaining MV, especially when it can still be appreciated with little understanding of each quirky additive. I hope they keep with this sort of story telling because it makes them more intriguing to look at as you eagerly, yet suspiciously, await what will occur next! Listen if you haven't yet and prepared to be addicted!

Zico Debut with the first mini album Gallery

Zico ~ Gallery
Perhaps best known as the leader of the hip-hop/R&B outfit Block B, rapper Zico just dropped his first mini-album, which includes his recent digital singles "Tell Me Yes or No," "Day," and "Boys and Girls." Here he teams up with Babylon, JTONG, DJ Wegun,Zion.Tsoul songstress  Suranand others to bring you this  'Galleryof hip-hop stylings.

"VENI VIDI VICI"
The title is a quote by Julius Caesar, "I came, I saw, I conquered," a description of a quick and easy victory. The title is appropriate, as the song chronicles his rise to the top from the bottom and he makes it sound both quick and easy. The lyrics are bold and truculent, and his delivery and flow reflect that admirably. I can't help but notice that he doesn't quite say the"veni vidi vici" part, but it makes such a great hook that you won't care.

"Eureka"
Beginning with sassy, buried horns and Zion.T's croons, Eureka is a naughty hip-hop piece with a croon and hook-filled chorus. The horns just as quickly hit front and center, threatening to engulf Zico and Zion.T's vocals. Thankfully, they don't, giving us easy access to the playful lyrics. It's essentially saying "Eureka! I found the perfect girl!"

"Pride & Prejudice"
In my opinion, this is where Zico shows off his range, teaming up with indie soul-singerSuran. He takes the edge of his raps for this one, with laid-back delivery and pitter-patter flow. Suran's voice is emotive here and needy, giving the song it's soulful feel. Tinkling piano and a funky horn are the perfect R&B toppers for this track. These lines pretty well sum it up:

"Pride and prejudice
Tell me what is more important
I thought wrong"

"Boys And Girls"
Having as much in common with funk as with hip-hop, this song is playful, with synth backed singing from Babylon set off from Zico's raps. It's very much a party song, but atypical of such songs is that it's very stripped-down. It's an enjoyable little ride, and for some reason, the line "I'm a boy and you're a girl," repeated several times, makes me laugh.

"Day"
When it starts, it feels like a Big Beat remix, but they dial that back in the bridge. Regardless, both JTONG and Zico spit their raps at you defiantly, almost as if they were engaged in some kind of K-pop sciamachy. I like the aggressive delivery here. the pounding beat helps a lot here, too, evening out the chaotic synth riffs. It has an ominous tone at the end. The song is about how they'll take on all comers and come out on top no matter what.

"Yes Or No"
I've already reviewed this as a single. My thoughts on it really haven't changed.

Zico really hits his stride here, and delivers a full-on rap attack that should leave you breathless trying to keep up. The songs are almost consistently kinetic, moving and daring you to move with them. The hooks are awesome, and the collaborators are distinctive and engaging. If you're looking for infectious beats, look no further.

Boy Band iKON Comeback with the First Full Album of Welcome Back

Ikon ~ Welcome Back

After a warm-up single, half album, and even a double digital single, iKON has dropped the highly-anticipated full version of their  'Welcome Backdebut album. The new release features a ton of their pre-release tracks, so you have all your faves in one place. But there are three new tracks that you haven't heard, so how do they stack up?

"Dumb & Dumber"
Despite my misgivings about the title, this track is anything but dumb. Don't get me wrong -- the lyrics are lacking intellectually, but the big room aesthetic, time changes during the bridge, the rapping, and the hooks are all awesome here. This is a sweet party starter that demands to be added to your Friday night playlists.

"What's Wrong?"
This song reminds me a lot of Big Bang's recent material. Before you get upset, it's meant as a compliment. On the surface, it's nearly a companion song to "Sober," but beyond that is where the similarities end. The song's message is as much a statement as a question about what went wrong and how they're just roommates and not really lovers anymore. The tune is generally upbeat despite the subject matter.

"I Miss You So Bad"
The song that has fans excited is this tune by G-Dragon, with additions by B.I. and Bobby.G-Dragon gave them the song as "a debut present," according to YG Entertainment, asiKON was recording next door during Big Bang's 'MADE' sessions. Starting with an understated horn that finds its way back during most of the tune, the song itself is slower. The chorus is sort of a slow burn, aggressive raps and a rapid succession of syllables during the main verses bringing most of the enjoyment here. The beginning lines turn out to be the chorus later on, and I enjoy the parallels here:

"I hope this wouldn't be
the last song that I sing for you
I hope this wouldn't be
the last letter that I write for you
I hope this wouldn't be
the last time that I'm going to you
I pray."

 "Rhythm Ta Remix" (Rock Ver.)
There's  not much here that you haven't heard in the original, and to be frank, the original was better. It's really just the vocal track with different backing instruments. It's pretty loud and sounds awkward in places. Definitely not my cup of tea.

As I said before, even if their warm-up single wasn't anything to write home about, they consistently surprised me with offerings like "Anthem" and "Apology," and established themselves as more than just another idol band with members writing their own material. The album runs the gamut from high-energy tracks to mellower fare, and the boys came through with their trademark charm.
